From Mogadishu to Jigjiga to Oslo — here is everything SYR has been doing on the ground.
Four major activities completed since our official launch — each one a step toward a stronger, safer Somali youth community.
📍 Mogadishu, Somalia
The official launch of Somali Youth Resilience took place in Mogadishu — marking a historic milestone in strengthening Somali youth. The event was jointly organised by SYR and the Mamo Ugaaso Foundation.
The launch brought together youth, community leaders, and supporters to mark the beginning of SYR's presence in Somalia. SYR expresses sincere gratitude to the Mamo Ugaaso Foundation and Port Director Ali Amerika for their invaluable support in making this event a success.
📍 Central Mogadishu
Street Team is a collaborative project between Somali Youth Resilience and the Mamo Ugaaso Foundation. The first pilot was carried out in central Mogadishu, focusing on outreach work among youth at risk of violence, crime, and substance abuse.
The team distributed food and drinks to young people in the area. During the visit, open drug use was observed and several youth were clearly intoxicated — confirming the critical need for a sustained, trusted adult presence and civil society support in these communities.
The pilot confirmed the necessity of continued outreach, and the Street Team intends to expand and strengthen this initiative going forward.
📍 Lido Beach, Mogadishu
SYR, in collaboration with the Mamo Ugaaso Foundation, organised a structured activity day for youth affiliated with the Foundation's youth centre. The event aimed to promote social cohesion, well-being, and physical activity.
Young people took part in football, tug-of-war, swimming, and team games. The day unfolded in a positive, safe atmosphere — with participants expressing joy, engagement, and a strong sense of community.
SYR works directly in Somalia and Ethiopia, using sport and structured activities to reach youth where they live.
SYR leverages football to promote peace, resilience, youth development, and safe spaces for young people to learn and thrive independently.
Based in Oslo, SYR runs programmes for Somali-Norwegian youth — addressing the unique challenges of growing up between two cultures.
Working with youth at risk of involvement in crime or gang activity. SYR provides mentoring, positive activities, and a network of trusted adults as an alternative pathway.
Supporting Somali parents navigating the challenges of raising teenagers in Norway. We offer guidance sessions that bridge cultural and generational gaps.
Mentoring young Somali-Norwegian athletes as they pursue sports careers — from grassroots football to elite pathways — and navigate institutions that may feel unfamiliar.
Facilitated conversations in safe settings about substance abuse, identity, violence, and peer pressure — using trusted community voices, not top-down lecturing.
Volunteer, donate, or partner with SYR to help us do more — in Norway, Somalia, and beyond.
